Health insurance plans come in many forms, each offering benefits and styles of care that might be more suitable to some than others, depending on your needs and preferences.
Understanding the type of plan you have can help you better manage your care and your budget and get the most out of your health insurance plan.
Let’s examine two common plan types: Point of Service (POS) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO).
Point of Service (POS)
A POS plan allows you to choose a primary care physician (PCP) who may have to give you a referral for a specialist. You do have the flexibility to see in- or out-of-network providers, but you will pay less when you use an in-network provider or hospital.
When might this be a good fit? This may be the best choice if you have an in-network PCP, don’t mind them coordinating your care and want more flexibility than some other plans.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
A PPO plan gives you the flexibility to manage your own care, with or without referrals from a PCP. Like a POS, you can see an in- or out-of-network provider, but you will save money if you stay in-network.
While a PPO likely has higher premiums, it typically has a lower copay and coinsurance.
When might this be a good fit? This may be the best choice if you typically choose in-network care but want the flexibility to see other providers or to see specialists without always needing a referral.
The bottom line
A PPO offers more autonomy in who you see for medical care, but typically at a higher cost.
Decision-making tip: If you aren’t sure which option is best, look at your health history and expenses to see what your needs have been recently.
